Wisdom teeth are the third molars that most people get in their late teens or early twenties. These teeth usually come through the gums between the ages of 17 and 25. These teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned, but more often, they are misaligned and require removal.
Sometimes, wisdom teeth grow in properly and never cause any trouble. But often, wisdom teeth get stuck in your gums or jawbone and don’t grow in (impacted wisdom teeth). When this happens, it can result in infection, cavities, gum disease and other oral health issues. That’s why many healthcare providers recommend removing them.
What is the procedure for a Wisdom tooth extraction?
Surgical extractions may involve making a small incision in the gum to access the tooth or removing bone around the tooth. In the case of an impacted tooth, the dentist or oral surgeon may need to remove surrounding tissue or bone to expose the tooth and extract it. Stitches may be required to close the incision, and post-operative care instructions are provided.
What is the recovery period from a tooth extraction?
It normally takes a few days to recover after a tooth extraction. The following steps help ensure that your recovery goes smoothly.
1. For the first 24 hours, try to avoid eating hot food, don’t smoke, and don’t drink any alcohol and try not to disturb any blood clot which might have formed.
2. Don’t rinse your mouth for 24 hours after extraction. After that, rinse gently with warm salty water – half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water is enough.
3. Brush your teeth as normal to keep your mouth as clean as possible.
4. There may be some swelling and a bit of discomfort in the first two to three days. take medicines prescribed and visit us for a follow up after 8 days.
